Navigating to Brighton Marina by sea
Brighton Marina is situated directly on the coast, against a backdrop of white cliffs just half a mile east of the city of Brighton.
We enjoy welcoming visitors, but we highly recommend pre-booking, especially in peak season to avoid disappointment. Priority access is given to Premier berth holders visiting from other marinas.
Approaching Brighton Marina by sea, please call the marina’s reception on VHF Channel 80 or 37. The following notes are provided as a simple guide to approaching the marina by sea and should not be relied on for navigation. Please consult up-to-date charts and pilot books to ensure you are aware of any navigational dangers. Visitors should also be aware of current Notices to Mariners, the weather, and tides. See Brighton Marina tide times here.
Approaching Brighton Marina
Brighton’s entrance lies between the marina’s east and west breakwater arms. The channel is buoyed with red and green markers and the inner entrance is marked by fixed red and green vertical lights. Speed limit is five knots. At night, the breakwater lights are visible up to six miles.
When approaching from the west, please give the end of the western breakwater a wide berth to avoid exiting traffic. In heavy weather, many vessels choose to approach from the south, which avoids much of the backwash from the breakwaters.
Navigation data harbour lights
Western Breakwater: QR 1 sec 9.6m 7M.
Eastern Breakwater: QG 1 sec 8.3m 7M.
West Quay: 2 F Vert Red.
South Quay: 2 F Vert Green.
Entrance channel
The entrance channel is dredged to 1.7m below chart datum. However, storms tend to drive sand in to form a bank to the south and east of the end of the eastern breakwater and shoaling may occur in the entrance channel, particularly on the east side. Vessels with a draft above one metre are advised to wait at least 120 minutes either side of low water.
Visiting vessels
Visiting vessels should call on Channel 80 or 37, or telephone 01273 819919 for a berth. Alternatively, go to visitor pontoons 10 and 11, which are in front and to port as you pass the inner entrance and contact the marina’s reception, on the first floor of the West Jetty.
